**Bub & Pop | Episode 9: Silas Herman** (recorded January 27, 2026)

Our guest this week is Silas Herman, a rising star in the newgrass world and a phenomenally sweet guy. He and his band, the Tone Unit, opened for Kitchen Dwellers during the second night of their three-night Denver run in January 2026\. (I reviewed the show [here](https://liveforlivemusic.com/news/kitchen-dwellers-biggest-show-to-date-mission-ballroom-denver-1-22-24-26/?ref=bubandpop.com).)

[Episode 9: Silas HermanBub & Pop | Episode 9: Silas Herman (recorded January 27, 2026) Join music journalist Matt Hoffman for a conversation with Silas Herman, a rising star in the jamgrass world. His last name likely is familiar to fans of Leftover Salmon, co-founded by his father Vince. We caught up in Denver, when![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/96/b9/96b93614-6cf3-4171-9c3d-fd372ff27e5a/content/images/icon/Bub-and-Pop-1-31041273-513d-4d7d-8d46-0762d413a962.jpg)Bub & PopMatt Hoffman![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/96/b9/96b93614-6cf3-4171-9c3d-fd372ff27e5a/content/images/thumbnail/Silas-Herman-Thumbnail-Landscape-Black-Background-64b66389-4163-4a19-b705-d24b5cf8d669.png)](https://www.bubandpop.com/episode-9-silas-herman/)

Silas isn't necessarily the most well-known Herman in the bluegrass space. (Surely that's his father, Vince, guitarist and co-founder of Leftover Salmon.) But the gifted apple doesn't fall far from the talent tree, as it were, and Silas – a virtuosic mandolinist in his own right – has assembled a team of badass singers, players, and artists to accompany him as the Tone Unit. Silas and the band have [tour dates](https://silasherman.com/events/?ref=bubandpop.com) scheduled through the end of the summer: you can – and should! – see them in Colorado, Montana, Washington, Oregon, and California.

Last week, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey (JFJO) – longtime band of our Episode #8 guest, [Reed Mathis](https://www.bubandpop.com/episode-8-reed-mathis-2/) – played shows in San Francisco and Santa Cruz. (Excellent recording of the SF show [here](https://archive.org/details/jfjo2026-05-27.zoom-h5.flac24).) We were thrilled to send two Bub & Pop listeners to each show.

I saw Aron Magner's [SPAGA](https://www.spagaband.com/?ref=bubandpop.com) trio play a bunch of tunes – some originals, some randos, lots of Dead – at [Dharma Bums](https://www.dbums.com/?ref=bubandpop.com), an excellent local venue that serves the best vegetarian and vegan food I've ever had. (No disrespect to you, Alice Waters.) Keep an eye out for my forthcoming *Relix* review.

I'm headed to the [Tonewood 10 Island Jam](https://www.tixr.com/groups/rsp/events/tonewood-10-island-jam-ft-pigeons-playing-ping-pong-cooper-river-park-179569?ref=bubandpop.com) this weekend and am psyched to see a ton of amazing artists: Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, LaMP, Grace Bowers, DJ Brownie, Deadtronica (Aron Magner & Cloudchord),Winderman, Colman & Kimock (see [Episode #1 - Jonathan Colman](https://youtu.be/nILaLxQQjek?si=sxdFraEG8slRYyb8&ref=bubandpop.com)!), and Crickets & Cicadas (see [Episode #3 - Anton Milioti](https://youtu.be/lnwSFSkbUb4?si=WEiVjGcV2hP%5FgKkA&ref=bubandpop.com)!), with artists at large Marc Brownstein, Aron Magner, and Kanika Moore (our guest on [Episode #2](https://youtu.be/xjSUu2bxM%5F0?si=Cy4mwcth%5FtztE72w&ref=bubandpop.com)!).
